Rectangle, round or embosser?
A notary stamp, or notary seal, is the official mark a notary public puts on every notarized document. Carousel sells three kinds, each made for one state:
- Rectangle notary stamp ($24.25): a self-inking stamp in black ink. Carousel’s product pages say it comes in a slim design which is easy to transport and that its self inking notary stamps follow all of the updated guidelines. Utah’s version is in purple ink.
- Round notary stamp ($33.00): a circular ink seal in black or blue ink. Tennessee’s version is in blue ink.
- Notary embosser ($33.00): a Trodat seal press that leaves a raised 1 5/8 inch impression with no ink, sold as a kit with a box and a leather bag.
Most notaries need one inking seal, because a raised seal does not show on a photocopy or a scan. Some add an embosser for documents where a raised seal is customary, such as papers headed overseas. Your state’s rules decide which shapes are allowed.

What your state requires
Each state sets its own rules for the notary seal: the shape and size, the ink color, and the wording, which usually includes your name as commissioned, the words Notary Public, the state, and your commission number or expiration date. The seller makes the stamp; your state decides whether it is valid. Before you order:
- Read the seal section of your state’s notary handbook or notary law, published by the office that issued your commission.
- Have your commission certificate in front of you and copy your name, commission number and expiration date exactly as printed.
- Pick the shape your state allows; where both are allowed, the rectangle stamp is the cheaper one at $24.25.
- Order a new stamp when your commission is renewed or your name changes, since the old seal shows the old details.
How to get a notary stamp
- Get commissioned as a notary public in your state and receive your commission certificate.
- Complete any bond, oath or filing your state requires before you start notarizing.
- Order the stamp for your state, typing your details exactly as they appear on the certificate.
- Check the proof against your certificate before you pay.
- When it arrives, test it on scrap paper and keep it locked away when you are not using it.
Other notary supplies
Carousel sells a Signature of Witness notary ink stamp for $20.75 in black ink, and a Trodat 9094 inkless fingerprint pad for $8.49 (5 for $37.49, 10 for $66.49, 25 for $154.49). Carousel says the pad gives over 1,000 impressions, uses a quick dry formula that won’t smear or smudge, and that the remaining ink rubs off easily.
