Short answer: a custom signature stamp copies your handwritten signature onto a self-inking stamp, so you can sign letters, forms and deposit paperwork in one press. Carousel Checks makes one from a photo or scan of your signature for $12.00, with a 7/8 by 2 3/8 inch imprint that lasts thousands of impressions; Bank Checks Plus sells the same stamp for $16.02. Sign with a black felt tip pen on white paper before you upload. Prices checked October 20, 2026.

What a signature stamp is

A signature stamp is a self-inking rubber stamp made from an image of your own signature. You sign once on paper, upload the image, and the printer turns it into a stamp die. Every press after that prints the same signature in the same size and position, which saves time when you sign the same kind of document over and over.

The Carousel Custom Signature Stamp is pre-inked: the ink pad sits inside the stamp, so there is no separate pad to carry, and Carousel says it lasts for thousands of impressions before the pad needs changing.

Can you sign checks with a stamp?

The law allows it in principle. UCC section 3-401 says a signature can be made manually or by means of a device or machine, and by any word, mark or symbol a person adopts with the present intention to authenticate a writing. That rule covers stamped and machine-printed signatures.

Your bank’s account agreement still sets the rules for your account. Before you stamp the drawer signature on checks you write, ask your bank whether it accepts facsimile signatures and whether it wants a facsimile signature agreement on file. Under section 3-401 a stamped signature counts as your signature, which is exactly why a lost stamp is a risk.

For the back of the check, an endorsement stamp is the better tool: it prints For Deposit Only with your account details instead of a bare signature. See our For Deposit Only stamp guide.

How to get a sharp signature image

  1. Sign your name with a black felt tip pen on plain white paper. Carousel asks for this so it gets a very high quality image of your signature.
  2. Sign a few times and pick the cleanest one, with no letters touching the edge of the paper.
  3. Scan it, or photograph it flat in daylight with no shadow across the paper.
  4. Crop close around the signature and upload the image on the product page.
  5. Zoom in on the image before you upload it and make sure the whole signature is sharp and complete.

What people use them for

  • Signing stacks of letters, receipts, invoices and acknowledgments in an office.
  • Signing when arthritis or another condition makes holding a pen hard, where the bank or office has agreed to accept a stamp.
  • Approving routine internal paperwork, such as timesheets or packing slips.
  • Adding a signature next to a typed name on forms, together with a single line name stamp and a date stamp.

Stamping envelopes too? A self-inking return address stamp prints your name and address in one press: $11.99 at Checks Unlimited or $12.00 at Carousel in 11 ink colors (checked October 20, 2026).

Keeping a signature stamp safe

  • Lock it away when you are not using it. Anyone holding the stamp can reproduce your signature.
  • Keep a short log of who uses it and for what, if more than one person has access.
  • Destroy an old stamp when you replace it, and tell your bank if a stamp used on an account goes missing.
  • Never stamp blank checks in advance.

Check fraud protection on the checks themselves helps too: Carousel and Bank Checks Plus offer EZShield Check Fraud Protection on their check pages, covering unauthorized use of up to $25,000. Our business checks guide compares check formats.

Notarizing or dating documents? Self-inking state notary stamps start at $24.25 (see our notary stamp guide), and a custom date stamp costs $12.50 at Carousel Checks (checked October 20, 2026).
