Short answer: a return address stamp is a self-inking stamp that prints your name and address on envelopes, so you stop handwriting it or buying labels. The cheapest one we found is the Checks Unlimited Standard Address Stamp at $11.99. Carousel Checks sells 4, 5 and 6 line address stamps for $12.00 in 11 ink colors, designer stamps for $14.50, and Checks Unlimited sells Disney Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh address stamps for $15.99. What a return address stamp is

A return address stamp, also sold as an address stamper or self-inking address stamp, holds your name and address on a die with the ink built into the case. You press it once where the return address goes on an envelope, a package label or a form, and it prints the same clean imprint every time. There is no separate ink pad to carry around.

The check printers we cover describe their stamps the same way. Checks Unlimited says its self-inking stamps are good for thousands of impressions and ship with an imprint sample inserted into the top of the case, so you can see which stamp is which on your desk. Carousel Checks calls its address stamps pre-inked and says they last for thousands of impressions before you need to change the ink pad, and it makes them with low emission manufacturing and recycled plastics.

A stamp beats labels on cost once you mail a lot: one $12.00 stamp keeps printing after a roll or sheet of labels would be gone. If you prefer labels with designs, see our address labels pages.

Checks Unlimited address stamps

Checks Unlimited sells seven address stamps, each priced per stamp (two cost twice the single price):

  • Standard ($11.99): a simple design that Checks Unlimited pitches to busy households and offices.
  • Contemporary ($13.99): your address in a sleek, modern font.
  • Calligraphy ($13.99): a stylish calligraphy font for invitations and cards.
  • Angel ($13.99): an angel illustration next to your name and address.
  • American Flag ($13.99): the flag beside your address with the motto United We Stand underneath.
  • Disney Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh ($15.99 each): licensed Disney art. Checks Unlimited states that business or organizational use of these stamps is prohibited, so they are for personal mail.

Checks Unlimited ships stamps separately from checks and says they take up to 3 weeks to arrive. The same accessories menu also lists the Guard Your ID roller ($14.03), a security stamp that covers printed text with a pattern so junk mail can go in the recycling instead of the shredder; its stamping surface is 1 inch wide.

How many lines you need

Count the lines of text before you pick a stamp. Carousel sells the same pre-inked stamp in five line counts:

Lines Typical layout Imprint size Carousel price
3 Name, street address, city, state and ZIP 1 7/8 by 3/4 inches $12.50
4 Adds a second name line or an apartment or suite line 2 3/8 by 7/8 inches $12.00
5 Adds a business name or a phone number 2 3/8 by 7/8 inches $12.00
6 Adds an email or web address 2 3/8 by 7/8 inches $12.00
8 Full business block with name, address, phone, email and web 2 1/2 by 1 inch $13.75

The 4, 5 and 6 line stamps share one imprint size, so more lines means smaller type on the same face. For a plain home address, the 3 or 4 line stamp keeps the letters large and easy to read.

Designer, monogram and round stamps

Carousel’s rectangle designer stamps add artwork beside the address: house, floral, monogram, block monogram, notebook and artistic designs. Each costs $14.50 with a 7/8 by 2 3/8 inch imprint in any of the 11 ink colors.

For a bigger statement, Carousel’s round designer stamps print a 1 5/8 by 1 5/8 inch circle; the round cat stamp costs $29.50, and the range includes deer, coffee, mandala and a save the date design for wedding mail.

Prefer a raised seal? A personalized address or monogram embosser presses your name and address into paper with no ink, $24.25 at Carousel Checks (checked October 20, 2026). Compare designs in our custom embosser guide.

Ink colors and refill pads

Carousel offers every address and designer stamp in 11 ink colors: black, red, blue, green, light blue, purple, pink, signal yellow, zinc yellow, grey and orange. Bank Checks Plus offers red, black, blue and green. Checks Unlimited lists one price per stamp.

When the imprint turns faint, swap the pad instead of buying a new stamp. Carousel sells replacement pads for $7.00 in black, blue, green or red: the Ideal 4913 pad has a 7/8 by 2 3/8 inch impression size, the same as the 4, 5 and 6 line and designer stamps, and the Ideal 4912 pad has a 3/4 by 1 7/8 inch size, the same as the 3 line stamp. Grip tabs on the pad make the change quick.

What to put on your stamp

  • Use the name your mail carrier knows, and spell the street exactly as it appears on your mail.
  • Include the apartment, unit or suite number on the street line or on its own line.
  • Add the ZIP+4 code if you know it.
  • For a business, put the company name first, then the address; add a phone number or web address only if the stamp has room for it.
  • Read the proof on the order page twice before you check out: a typo prints on every envelope.

Mailing checks or bills? Our check envelopes guide compares security and window envelopes, and our check accessories page covers covers, registers and labels.

Other stamps for the desk: endorse checks with a For Deposit Only stamp (custom endorsement stamps from $12.00 at Carousel) and sign letters and forms with a custom signature stamp made from your own signature ($12.00 at Carousel, checked October 20, 2026).
