Are Ally Bank checks free?
Yes, the standard ones. On the Ally debit cards and checks help page, the answer to the question of whether checks are always free is that there’s no charge when you order standard Ally Bank checks. How to order Ally checks online
Ally lists two ways to place the free order:
- On ally.com: log in, select Profile and Settings from your Snapshot, choose Checks and Debit Cards, then select Order Checks.
- In the Ally app: select Menu, then choose Order checks.
In both, choose the account you want checks for, double-check the mailing address and select Submit Order. Ally says the checks arrive within 7 to 10 business days, and you can place only one order per checking account at a time. If an order is already open, wait for it to arrive before you order again.
Checks for a new Ally account
If you asked for checks or a debit card while opening the account, Ally says the order arrives within 10 business days after it receives your opening deposit. If you skipped checks when you opened the account, call 1-877-247-2559 to place the order. When you re-order standard checks later, Ally says to expect them within 10 business days after you submit the request.
Custom Ally checks
Ally’s help page sends custom check orders to the phone line at 1-877-247-2559, and it lists no design gallery and no prices for custom checks. If you want something other than the standard style, you have two choices: call Ally, or order checks printed for your Ally account from an independent printer, where you see every design and price before you pay.
An independent printer uses the routing number and account number from your Ally checks, so the checks draw on the same account. Checks Unlimited’s FAQ says the routing number you enter gives it the information it needs about your financial institution. The Checks Unlimited how-to-order page asks for your last name, email, ZIP code, starting check number, routing number and account number.

How to order Ally checks from a printer
- Take the routing number and account number from the bottom of an Ally check, or from your account details on ally.com.
- Pick a design, then singles or duplicates and top tear or side tear.
- Start the new checks after the last number in your current Ally checkbook so the numbers never repeat.
- Proofread the preview before you pay. Each digit in the account number has to match.
- Choose shipping. Checks Unlimited lists printing and standard untrackable delivery at up to 15 business days and printing with standard trackable delivery at 7 to 11 business days, both counted after order verification.
