Short answer: truly free checks come from your bank, not from a check printer. Capital One gives every 360 Checking customer a free first checkbook of 50 checks, Ally Bank charges nothing for its standard checks, and Chase Private Client and Wells Fargo Prime or Premier customers pay no fee for certain checks. If your bank charges, the closest thing to free is a printer deal: Checks Unlimited’s offer page lists a free 4th box with a 4-box order (code 8FJD). Facts checked October 20, 2026.

Banks that give free checks
These are the free-check policies we found in each bank’s own help pages and fee schedules on October 20, 2026. Each one applies to a specific account, so read the line for your account before you order.
- Capital One 360 Checking: the 360 Checking disclosures say each customer’s first 50-quantity checkbook is free. After that, the fee summary lists $20 for 50 checks and $25 for 100. The Capital One help page explains how to order in the app or online.
- Ally Bank: the Ally help center says there is no charge when you order standard Ally Bank checks, and you can request more when you run low. Checks arrive in 7 to 10 business days, and you can place one order per checking account at a time. Custom checks are ordered by phone.
- Chase Private Client Checking: the Chase Additional Banking Services and Fees document (effective 6/14/2026) lists personal style checks ordered through Chase under the Chase fees you don’t pay for this account. For other Chase accounts, the same document prices an order of checks by the products, shipping and taxes. See our Chase checks guide.
- Wells Fargo Prime Checking and Premier Checking: the Wells Fargo consumer fee schedule (effective July 28, 2026) lists no fee for Wells Fargo Personal Wallet checks for these accounts. See our Wells Fargo checks guide.
Credit unions and smaller banks set their own rules, and some include a first box with a new account. Ask before you open the account, and check our Capital One checks page or the bank pages linked from our check companies guide for reorder steps.
Bank by bank: our Ally Bank checks guide shows how to order the free standard checks, our Navy Federal checks guide covers the Free Active Duty Checking perk, and our how to get a checkbook guide lists every way to get a first checkbook.

| Ally Bank checking | Standard Ally Bank checks | Custom checks by phone | Ally help center |

| Wells Fargo Prime or Premier Checking | Wells Fargo Personal Wallet checks | Fee schedule: $30 singles, $35 duplicates | Wells Fargo fee schedule |

What banks charge when checks are not free
Bank-printed checks are rarely cheap once the free box is gone. The Wells Fargo fee schedule lists check ordering at $30 for singles and $35 for duplicates, and personalized temporary checks at $3 per sheet of three. Chase charges $3 per page for a counter check, a blank page of 3 personal checks printed at a branch. Capital One charges $20 for a 50-check book, which is 40 cents a check. Our counter checks guide covers the branch option for when you need one check today.
Compare that with a check printer: standard Checks Unlimited designs cost $23.49 for a box of 80 checks, about 29 cents a check, and $72.29 for 4 boxes, about 23 cents. Your bank accepts checks from an independent printer because the routing number and account number print in the same MICR line your bank uses.
Free 4th box and other check deals
On October 20, 2026 the Checks Unlimited Special Offers page listed two codes, and only one code works per order:
- 8FJD: FREE 4th Box of Checks with a 4-Box Order, plus free lettering and a free upgrade to Special Edition checks.
- KQTG: save up to 30% off 2 boxes or up to 35% off 4 boxes. The site banner showed a second up to 35% off code, R7VL, the same day.
The free 4th box makes the most sense when you write enough checks to use 320 of them, or when you want a licensed or Special Edition design such as Harley-Davidson or Platinum that normally costs $26.49 a box. The percentage codes are written for 2-box and 4-box orders. Our Checks Unlimited guide compares the codes and the add-ons that change the final price, and coupons and specials lists deals at other printers.

The catch with free checks
- Basic design only. Free bank checks are a plain standard style. Ally sends custom designs through its phone line, and the Wells Fargo benefit names Personal Wallet checks.
- Small quantities. Capital One’s free book holds 50 checks; a Checks Unlimited box holds 80.
- One account only. Capital One says fees vary on later orders, including checkbooks for additional accounts.
- Account requirements. Chase Private Client and Wells Fargo Prime or Premier are premium accounts with their own balance requirements, so the free checks are a perk, not a reason to switch.
- Scam offers. A site that asks for your routing and account number for free checks with no bank or printer behind it is a fraud risk. Our check washing guide covers safer habits.
How to get free checks
- Look up your account in your bank’s fee schedule or help center and search for checks.
- If the first box or standard checks are free, order them in online banking or the bank app.
- If your bank charges, compare its price with a printer box of 80 at $23.49 and a multi-box deal such as the free 4th box.
- Order from a printer with the routing number, account number and next check number from a current check.
- Keep the unused checks locked away and shred old ones when you close an account.
Checks Unlimited lists printing and standard untrackable delivery at up to 15 business days and printing with standard trackable delivery at 7 to 11 business days, both counted after order verification. In-Plant Rush costs $6.99 and gets the order processed and ready to ship within 2 business days after verification. Prices include handling fees, and SentryShield fraud protection is added to every order for an extra charge that you can remove in the cart.
