Short answer: yes, you can order checks for an American Express Rewards Checking account. The Rewards Checking Schedule says you order them through Amex’s third-party check provider by following the link online or in the Amex App, and the price is set by that provider. Because the checks only need your Amex routing and account numbers, you can also order them from an independent printer, from $23.49 for a box of 80. Facts checked October 21, 2026.

Can you get checks with Amex?

Yes. The schedule’s Physical Checks section says you can choose to purchase and use physical checks with your Rewards Checking account. The Amex checking account page lists no fee to open, no minimum deposit and no monthly fees, and Amex charges no fee for overdrafts because it does not offer overdraft services. Checks are the one optional cost: the fee schedule lists Checkbooks and Check Supplies as varies based on items purchased.

Amex Rewards Checking is an online account, so there is no branch to pick up a checkbook. Checks arrive by mail from the check provider. The schedule quoted on this page is the version marked Rev. November 13, 2025.

How to order Amex checks

  1. Log in to your American Express account online or open the Amex App.
  2. Follow the order checks link to the third-party check provider.
  3. Enter your account number, your routing number and the other required information the provider asks for.
  4. Pick a design and quantity on the provider site and pay the provider.

The schedule notes that the provider’s own terms apply and that Amex’s online terms, security policies and privacy policies do not govern the provider’s website. Check the provider’s prices and delivery times before you pay.

What Amex checks cost

Amex publishes no check prices. The schedule says one or more third-party vendors provide checkbooks and check supplies and determine pricing, which the third party gives you directly. It also says American Express shares revenue from the sale of checkbooks and check supplies purchased for Rewards Checking accounts. That is common with banks, and it is one reason to compare the price with an independent printer.

Order from a check printer

A check printer puts your Amex routing number and account number on the MICR line, so the checks draw on the same account. Checks Unlimited’s FAQ says the routing number you enter gives it all the information it needs about your financial institution, and its how-to-order page asks for your last name, email, ZIP code, starting check number, routing number and account number.

  1. Copy the routing number and account number from your Amex account details. The schedule says you need both for any check order.
  2. Choose a design, singles or duplicates, and top tear or side tear.
  3. Start at check number 101 for a first order, or after the last number you used.
  4. Proofread the preview. Each digit has to match.
  5. Choose delivery. Checks Unlimited lists printing and standard untrackable delivery at up to 15 business days and printing with standard trackable delivery at 7 to 11 business days, both counted after order verification. In-Plant Rush costs $6.99 and gets the order processed and ready to ship within 2 business days after verification. SentryShield fraud protection is added to every order for an extra charge that you can remove in the cart.

Writing and stopping checks

  • Amex can pay or decline any check that lacks your signature or has incomplete, inconsistent or incorrect information. If the amount in words and in numbers differ on a check you deposit, Amex uses the amount in words.
  • To stop payment, notify Amex in writing or by phone before it starts processing the check, with the account number, the exact amount, the payee name, the date and the printed check number.
  • Amex charges no fee for unpaid or declined items, but third parties such as the payee or its bank can charge their own fees.
  • Do not postdate a check. The schedule says Amex can pay a check before the date written on it, even if you told Amex it is postdated, and it asks you not to write conditional notes such as void after 30 days.
  • Bill Pay can mail a paper check for you; the schedule says those payments typically reach the biller within seven business days.
