Short answer: computer checks are pre-printed check sheets that you run through a laser or inkjet printer from accounting software. Your bank details and check numbers come printed; the software adds the payee, amount and date. Checks Unlimited sells them from $99.55 for 500 (three checks per sheet) and $135.14 for 500 (one check per sheet with voucher stubs). The format has to match what your software prints. The four computer check formats

The Checks Unlimited computer checks page says its computer checks are guaranteed compatible with your accounting software, and the business site files them under Computer Checks Laser/Inkjet. The formats differ by where the check sits on the 8 1/2 x 11 sheet:

Format Layout Typical software Checks Unlimited, 500
Check-on-the-Top One check at the top, two voucher stubs below QuickBooks, Microsoft Money, Simply Money, MECA $135.14
Check in the middle Stub above and below the check Peachtree (Sage 50), MAS 90, Great Plains, Checkmark $135.14
Check-No-Voucher Three business checks per sheet, no stubs QuickBooks, Microsoft Money, MicroEdge $99.55
Personal Lasers Three personal-size checks per sheet, each with a stub Microsoft Money, QuickBooks, Simply Money, MECA $99.55

Voucher formats give you and the payee a record of what the check pays. Our voucher checks guide explains the stubs, and our laser checks guide shows each layout in more detail.

Match the checks to your software

The Checks Unlimited software list names Checkmark, Great Plains 5.3 to 9.0, Quicken, QuickBooks, QuickBooks Pro, Microsoft Money, MECA Managing Your Money, MicroEdge Checkbook Manager, Peachtree, Best Software MAS 90 and Simply Money. For any other program it asks you to call 1-800-954-5590. Software guides:

A quick test settles any doubt: print a check from your software on plain paper and lay it over a sample sheet. The payee line, amount box and stub text have to line up.

Personal computer checks

For a household account, Personal Lasers put three personal-size checks on each sheet; the product image shows a record stub at the left of each check. They cost $71.10 for 250, $99.55 for 500 or $156.48 for 1,000. Our personal laser checks guide compares them with the Quicken and Sage wallet checks.

High security computer checks

Software-brand check stores

Quicken Checks Laser Multi-Purpose Checks, 3 per sheet $139.95 for 408, free standard shipping about 34 cents

Checks Unlimited adds one shipping and handling charge in the cart. The brand stores tie a compatibility guarantee to their software; the Quicken store lists Quicken, QuickBooks, MS Dynamics, Xero, Sage and more as compatible.

Pre-printed or blank stock

Pre-printed computer checks need only a normal laser or inkjet printer. Blank check stock costs less per sheet but needs software that prints the MICR line and, for bank-grade results, MICR toner. Our blank check stock guide and check printer guide cover that route, and our check printing software guide lists programs.

  • Double window envelopes: $43.56 for 250 or $57.66 for 500 for the default style, with Check-on-Top and No-Voucher styles in the menu.
  • Computer deposit slips: $38.65 for 250 or $55.54 for 500, compatible with QuickBooks and QuickBooks Pro.
  • Laser Taxi: $22.87 for 10 reusable carrier sheets that run one or two leftover checks from a 3-per-page sheet through the printer.

How to order computer checks

  1. Print a test check from your software on plain paper and note the layout: top, middle or three per page.
  2. Pick the matching format, a style and a quantity. Prices per check drop sharply at 1,000 and 2,000.
  3. Enter the business name and address, routing number, account number and starting check number. The Checks Unlimited business FAQ asks you to have one of your checks you are presently using at hand, not a deposit slip, and says the information MUST match the records on file at your bank.
  4. For a logo or unlisted software, call 1-800-954-5590.
  5. Choose delivery and decide whether to keep SentryShield in the cart.

Every Checks Unlimited business product page lists Standard Delivery at 7 to 14 business days and Secure Trackable Delivery at 3 to 6 business days, counted after processing and printing. The business FAQ says standard printing generally takes 2 to 5 business days, and In-Plant Rush, chosen at checkout, cuts processing to 2 business days. SentryShield fraud protection is added to every check order for an extra charge, and you can remove it in the cart. Our business checks guide covers manual checks, and our cheapest checks and reorder guides cover personal accounts.
