Voucher or standard: which QuickBooks checks you need
Intuit’s Print a check in QuickBooks Online help article says you choose your check type, Voucher or Standard, before you print: standard checks have three checks per page, while voucher checks have one check and check stubs. Order the layout you plan to select in QuickBooks:
- Voucher checks (check on top): one check at the top of the sheet and two stubs below for the payment details, so you can keep a record and send one stub with the check. Best for paying vendors and for payroll.
- Standard checks (no voucher): three checks on one sheet with no stubs. Cheaper per check and faster to print in batches.
If you also write checks away from the office, Intuit sells wallet and manual checks, and Checks Unlimited sells 3-on-a-page manual checks. Our QuickBooks voucher checks guide goes deeper on the voucher layout, and our laser checks guide covers top, middle and bottom formats for other software.
QuickBooks checks from Checks Unlimited
The Checks Unlimited business site has a QuickBooks formats page with five products. Each one lists QuickBooks among the compatible programs, along with Microsoft Money:
- Check-on-the-Top without lines and Check-on-the-Top with lines: the voucher layout. Same price either way.
- Check-No-Voucher without lines and Check-No-Voucher with lines: the standard layout. The product image shows three checks on each sheet.
- Personal Lasers: personal laser checks from $71.10 for 250 or $99.55 for 500.
Styles for the business formats include Classic Blue, Classic Green, Concordia, Country Club, Diamonds, Executive Gray, Nature’s Majesty, Parchment, Suede, Terra Cotta and Celtic, plus High Security Premium Classic Blue and Premium Parchment. Every check carries chemical protection, erasure protection and a microprint signature line. The checks are one-part; Checks Unlimited notes duplicates exclude computer checks.

How to print checks in QuickBooks Online
Intuit’s help article lists these steps:
- Go to All apps, then Expenses and Bills, then Expense transactions, and select Print checks.
- Open the check you want to print and select Print later or Print check.
- Choose your check type: Voucher or Standard, to match the sheets you bought.
- In Starting check number, enter the number of the first check in the printer.
- Select the checks, then Preview and print. If any print wrong, select Some checks need reprinting and enter the first check number to fix.
Print one test page on plain paper first and hold it over a real check sheet to see the alignment. Our check printing software guide covers alignment and printers.
How to order QuickBooks checks
- Pick the layout that matches your QuickBooks check type: Check-on-the-Top for voucher, Check-No-Voucher for standard.
- Choose a style and quantity. Larger quantities cut the price per check a lot.
- Enter the business name, address, routing number, account number and starting check number. The Checks Unlimited business FAQ asks you to have one of your checks you are presently using at hand, not a deposit slip, and says the information MUST match the records on file at your bank.
- For a logo, call 1-800-954-5590; logo orders go through customer service.
- Choose delivery, then decide whether to keep SentryShield in the cart.
Every Checks Unlimited business product page lists Standard Delivery at 7 to 14 business days and Secure Trackable Delivery at 3 to 6 business days, counted after processing and printing. The business FAQ says standard printing generally takes 2 to 5 business days, and In-Plant Rush, chosen at checkout, cuts processing to 2 business days. SentryShield fraud protection is added to every check order for an extra charge, and you can remove it in the cart. Our business checks with logo guide explains logo orders, and our cheapest checks and reorder guides cover personal checks.
