Short answer: an RFID sleeve is a thin card holder with a metal layer that blocks the radio signal a card reader uses, so a contactless card cannot be read while it is inside. Carousel Checks sells RFID Security Card Sleeves at 5 for $3.00, 10 for $5.00, 50 for $20.00 and 100 for $30.00, which is 30 cents a sleeve. Each sleeve holds one card. What an RFID sleeve does

RFID stands for radio frequency identification. A contactless card carries a chip that talks to a reader by radio when you wave or tap the card, with no physical contact. A blocking sleeve wraps the card in a layer that stops that radio signal, so the chip stays silent until you take the card out.

Carousel describes its RFID Security Card Sleeves this way:

  • Advanced RFID SECURE Technology, a unique metal composite engineered to block 13.56 MHz or higher RFID signals.
  • Protects the valuable information stored on RFID chips from unauthorized scans.
  • Durable, water and tear resistant design that fits into a wallet or purse.
  • Comfortably fits one card; dimensions 2 1/4 by 3 1/2 inches.

EMVCo, which manages and licenses the contactless marks used on payment cards, says EMV contactless chip payments work when you wave or tap a card or phone on the terminal, and that a one-time use security code is generated for every transaction to safeguard against fraud. A sleeve adds a physical layer on top: no tap, no read.

RFID sleeve prices

Carousel Checks RFID Security Card Sleeves (item SCS-01), checked October 20, 2026:

Pack Price Per sleeve
5 sleeves $3.00 60 cents
10 sleeves $5.00 50 cents
50 sleeves $20.00 40 cents
100 sleeves $30.00 30 cents

Five sleeves cover the cards most people carry every day: two credit cards, a debit card, a driver license and one more. The 10-pack covers a couple. Checks Unlimited and Bank Checks Plus do not list RFID sleeves; Carousel is the only one of our three check printers that sells them.

Which cards to sleeve

Look for the EMVCo Contactless Indicator on the card: EMVCo describes it as four graduating arcs, the small wave mark printed on contactless cards, phones and key fobs. Cards with that mark are the ones to sleeve first:

  • Contactless credit and debit cards with the four-arc mark.
  • Spare contactless cards you keep in a drawer or a travel pouch.
  • Cards you carry but rarely use, such as a backup credit card.

Carousel rates the sleeve for 13.56 MHz or higher signals. For a work badge, a building access card or a transit card, ask the issuer which frequency it uses before you count on a sleeve for it. Cards without the contactless mark, the ones you only swipe or insert, never talk to a contactless reader, so a sleeve is optional for them.

How to use RFID sleeves

  1. Slide one card into each sleeve, chip end first.
  2. Keep the sleeved cards in your wallet, purse or checkbook cover as usual.
  3. Take the card out of the sleeve to tap, then slide it back after paying.
  4. For cards you insert or swipe, leave them in the sleeve until the moment you pay.
  5. Replace a sleeve once it tears or creases badly, since a broken layer leaves a gap.

Sleeved cards travel in a wallet, a purse or a checkbook cover; see our checkbook covers guide for covers that hold your checks and register together.

Buying in bulk

At 100 for $30.00, a sleeve costs 30 cents, so offices, credit unions, senior centers and clubs can hand them out in welcome packs or at shred days. Order the 100-pack and Carousel ships it with the rest of your order.

What an RFID sleeve does not do

A sleeve protects a contactless card only while the card is inside it. It does not stop someone who steals the wallet itself, a skimmer fitted to a card slot where you insert the card, or a phone call or email that tricks you into reading out the number. Pay with the card in sight, cover the keypad when you enter a PIN, and read your statements every month so a charge you did not make stands out.

More ways to protect your cards

  • Sign the back of a new card with a uni Super Ink pen; Carousel lists that use for its $3.00 UniBall Fraud Prevention Pen.
  • Black out card numbers and addresses on papers you throw away with Carousel’s Security Stamp ($12.00) or the Checks Unlimited Guard Your ID stamper ($14.03).
  • Protect the checks in the same wallet: see our check washing guide for high security checks and safe mailing habits.

How to order and delivery

  1. Pick the pack: 5, 10, 50 or 100 sleeves.
  2. Add a security stamp or a Super Ink pen if you need one.
  3. Choose delivery and pay.
