What manual business checks are

A manual check is written with a pen. A computer check, also called a laser check, is printed by accounting software such as QuickBooks. Manual checks suit a business that writes a handful of checks a week, pays vendors from a desk or a truck, or does not want to line up a printer. Each manual check has a stub or register line, so the record of who you paid, how much and why stays with the checkbook. Manual business checks also look different from personal checks. Most manual business formats use a business-size check, 8-1/4 inches wide; desk set checks are the wallet-size exception. They carry the business name and address at the top and the routing and account numbers in the MICR line at the bottom, the same as any other check your bank accepts.

3-on-a-page checks

General Purpose 3-on-a-Page checks are the standard manual business check. Each check is 8-1/4 x 3 inches, three come on a sheet that is 12-15/16 x 9 inches, and every check has a single stub. The checks fit a 7-ring binder only. You can add a symbol, custom lettering or a monogram. Styles include Blue Safety, Country Club, Executive Gray, Goldenrod, Green Safety, Marbled Fan, Parchment and Platinum. Prices:

Desk set checks

Desk Set Checks give you 3-on-a-page convenience with attached stubs for record keeping, in a smaller wallet-size check of 6 x 2-3/4 inches on a sheet of 8-1/8 x 8-1/4 inches. They fit a 3-ring binder only. Designs include American Wildflowers, Blue Classic, Country Club, Executive Gray, Nature’s Majesty, Parchment, Renaissance and Safety Check. Prices:

At 300 checks, desk set duplicates cost $68.49 against $89.87 for 3-on-a-page duplicates, so desk set is the cheaper way to keep a carbon copy of each check in a small order. From 600 to 1,800 checks the two duplicate prices are within a few dollars of each other.

Entrepreneur and Partner checks

  • The Entrepreneur: Checks Unlimited calls it a personal checkbook on a larger scale. The register sits next to the checks to give room for detail, with 28 pages for transactions and deposits. Checks come 3-on-a-page in one-part or duplicate. Entrepreneur checks cost $68.49 for 300, $84.34 for 600 and $150.75 for 1,200 one-part ($109.30 for 300 duplicates).   • The Partner: a compact pad of business-size checks, 8-1/4 x 3 inches, for everyday use next to computer and 3-on-a-page checks. High security manual checks

For larger payments, the High Security 3-on-a-Page checks add a reflective hologram that cannot be photocopied or removed, hot stamped into the check stock, plus a padlock icon, heat-sensitive ink, chemically sensitive paper, microprint that breaks up if scanned and a high resolution warning band. They come in Premium Classic Blue and Premium Parchment and cost $71.26 for 300, $101.00 for 600 and $171.56 for 1,200 one-part. All of these checks carry the same three security features: chemical protection, erasure protection and a microprint signature line. Binders and deposit slips

How to order and delivery

  1. Have a current business check in front of you. The Checks Unlimited business FAQ says the information must match what your bank has on file, and to use a check, not a deposit slip, as the reference.
  2. Pick the format, style, quantity and one-part or duplicate.
  3. Enter the business name and address, the routing number, the account number and the starting check number, which is the number after your last business check.
  4. Add a binder or deposit slips if you need them, then choose delivery.
  5. Need a logo? The FAQ says to call 1-800-954-5590 to order checks with a business logo.
